As dangerous as the ransomware sounds, there are steps that you can take to prevent the ransomware from attacking your system.
(Disclaimer: Nothing is 100% full proof and we cannot stop ransomware, though we can do our best to prevent from getting attacked)
- Make sure your antivirus software is up-to-date.
- Make sure that windows is up-to-date and don’t cancel updates.
- If you don’t have an antivirus installed, it better to grab hold of one.
- Do not download or execute any Adobe Flash update.
- Be careful of the software you download.
- Any older software should be updated to a newer version.
- When opening up email, be very careful in scrutinizing whom/where.
- If it contains any attachment, be very careful as to what type of attachment it is.
- Any attachment that is unknown should not be downloaded or opened.
- Web surfing – Visit only sites that are familiar.
- When the browser says the site might not be safe, DO NOT Click on Visit site anyway.
- Do not plug in or allow anybody else to plug in their personal usb devices.
- Do not plug cell phones into the system for charging.
- Ask yourself – what if I lost all my data tomorrow, would I be okay?
- If NOT.
- Back up all your data on a scheduled basis.
- If you keep a lot of data on your workstation, make sure it is backed up.
- Rotation of backed up media makes sure you have a redundant backup.
